Dear Friends and Family, עמו"ש

With the soul-satisfying scent of last year’s Shas-a-thon still suffusing the air, we embark on preparations for a new Shas-a-thon. Torah learning is never a repeat performance, an echo, but always a vibrant, vital experience with far reaching effects, and I plan to be part of this year’s event on Sunday the 10th of September, יום א' ניצבים-וילך יט אלול ה'תשע"ז at the Hilton London Metropole, once again in aid of A TIME. Together with my fellow learners, scholars and laymen alike, we will achieve the pinnacle of a Siyum HaShas in one place on one day.

For those unfamiliar with the superlative efforts of A TIME, here’s a brief rundown. The organisation provides medical, financial, emotional and halachic support, to couples navigating the unpleasant byroads of infertility. With sensitivity and respect, they accompany many such pairs over the hurdles on their path, aiding and praying with them for positive outcomes.

Our efforts at the Shas-a-thon help A TIME’s goals on the spiritual and financial fronts. I need your involvement to facilitate these accomplishments. Your sponsorship will make you a partner in the zechus of the learning and the zechus of the tremendous chessed done.

The kedusha and the achdus in such an undertaking are palpable and powerful. As a supporter, the bracha that resonates will be yours as much as mine. Thank you, on behalf of A TIME and myself, for opening your heart to our cause.

The Gemarah in סנהדרין · טז א

Discusses how they would go out to war(Milchemet Hareshut)

מנהני מילי אמר ר' אבהו דאמר קרא (במדבר כז, כא) ולפני אלעזר הכהן יעמוד הוא זה מלך וכל בני ישראל אתו זה משוח מלחמה וכל העדה זה סנהדרי ודילמא לסנהדרי הוא דקאמר להו רחמנא דלישיילו באורים ותומים אלא כי הא דאמר רב אחא בר ביזנא אמר רבי שמעון חסידא כנור היה תלוי למעלה ממטתו של דוד כיון שהגיע חצות לילה רוח צפונית מנשבת בו והיה מנגן מאליו מיד היה דוד עומד ועוסק בתורה עד שעלה עמוד השחר כיון שעלה עמוד השחר נכנסו חכמי ישראל אצלו אמרו לו אדונינו המלך עמך ישראל צריכין לפרנסה אמר להן לכו והתפרנסו זה מזה אמרו לו אין הקומץ משביע את הארי ואין הבור מתמלא מחולייתו אמר להם לכו פשטו ידיכם בגדוד מיד יועצין באחיתופל ונמלכין בסנהדרין ושואלין באורים ותומים

The gemorah wants to illustrate from this David how the yidden went to war; demanding the councel of their king and subsequently from the Sanhedrin.

The questioned to be asked is, if this is the point to be illustrated, the Gemarah should have started from the pasage were the Chachomim entered Dovid's room and said that the Yidden need parnasah etc. Why does the Gemorah start from earlier paragraph from king David had a harp hanging from his bed... and would wake up mid-night and learn Toirah the entire night...?

The answer I believe is, that the first paragrah of the story is actually the critical component in Jewish warfare. It is because Dovid studied the Torah the entire night that the Yidden were able to conquer their enemies because his holy Toire the Yidden had parnasah. Toire is the energy! Toire is the essence!

Menachem I am not supporting your Toire learning. The opposite is true your Toire learning is supporting us and the entire world!
